On Monday 2nd September, the first CB1 Bake off was held at the Community Room. Some excellent bakes were submitted and everyone was a winner!
With this being the first one, uptake was a little on the low side with three entries but on the plus side, this meant that everyone who entered was a winner for their efforts! Three excellent bakes were submitted. There was a wonderful chocolate cake decorated with buttons and kit-kats. There was a delicious coffee and walnut cake. And there was a sublime multi-coloured sponge cake.
The judging was done by Ling Ling Parnin of Maison Du Steak and Becky Burrell, the Commercial and Marketing Manager at Cambridge BID. The bakes were numbered so judging was anonymised. The winners were announced by Community Engagement officer Sam once judging and scoring was complete. Maison Du Steak and Cambridge BID along with Sainsbury’s Local at Station Road donated prizes. Both judges remarked on the high quality of all the bakes.
The prize giving was as follows:
First place – Olivia and Leila with their multi-coloured sponge cake
Second place – Kelly with her chocolate cake
Third place – Hilary with her coffee and walnut cake
Olivia and Leila were presented with a £50 Love Cambridge gift card, Kelly will receive a £40 Maison Du Steak voucher and Hilary will receive a mystery prize from Sainsbury’s.
Thank you to Becky and Ling Ling for judging and thanks to Cambridge BID, Maison Du Steak and Sainsbury’s Local at Station Road for donating the prizes. Thanks also to Helen and Tim for logistics on the day. And above all, thanks to the participating bakers for taking the time to make some fantastic creations!
This was the first time this has been done on CB1 so it is understandable that take-up was a little low but hopefully it was enjoyed by those who participated. We were aiming to have a bake sale but instead, it was decided to enjoy the cakes in the Community Room and for people to take slices home of their favourite bakes. We hope that the bake off and other activities like this can become a regular fixture on CB1.
